An expert in technology commercialization, she directed the Office of Technology Transfer at the NIH from 1995 to 2001 and served as a commissioner on the World Health Organization’s Commission on Intellectual Property Rights, Innovation and Public Health. Dr. Freire obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, and her PhD in Biophysics from the University of Virginia; she completed post-graduate work in Immunology and Virology at the University of Virginia and the University of Tennessee. She is currently a director at Exelixis, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXEL), Biogen (NASDAQ: BIIB), and Koneksa Health Inc. She has previously served on the Science Board of the Food and Drug Administration and as a member of the Commission on a Global Health Risk Framework for the Future of the Institute of Medicine, among others. Her awards include the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service, the Arthur S. Dr. Freire is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and the Council on Foreign Relations. |
