Senator Harkin was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1974, and 10 years later, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. Prior to his service in the House of Representatives, Mr. Harkin served in the U.S. Navy and achieved the rank of lieutenant commander. Mr. Harkin holds a B.S. from Iowa State University, a J.D. from Catholic University of America and was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1972.
